New London Sub Base

New London Sub Base

This base is not and never will be a pick for places we want to be based at!! The locals are unfriendly and there is not a whole lot to do in this area. We have found a few outlet malls within 45 minutes from the base for shopping and there is a small mall in Waterford which is about 20 minutes away. There is a drive in movie theater that shows 2 movies for 9 bucks an adult and has 3 screens going (pick your movie 3 playing at the same time). Movies start at dark and end around 2 am...is about a 30 minute drive north from Groton. The area is beautiful but I am tired of picking ticks off of my dog and "tick checking" the family. Never in my life have I dealt with poison ivy until living here!! It is everywhere and thank goodness I am the only one who has gotten it!!! Military housing is easy to get into and my neighbors and I joke that we are living in the Groton Ghetto. GMH runs the housing here and I have seen maintenance pretty frequently. FYI they will charge you your entire BAH to live here (minimun 1290 and some odd) but charge private residences 850 per month to live here!!! If you don't own a pet, look into renting an apartment in New London. It is on the other side of the river and approx a 15 minute drive from the base. Apartments with electric and a/c (which none of the military houses have) will start at around 900 a month letting you pocket a few hundred bucks and keep you out of the ghetto...LOL. The bonus to being based here is you are close to Boston and New York City both of which are great places to visit (and friendlier than Rotton Groton).
