Travis AFB is a large base located in Fairfield, CA. I would not consider it to be a big city but it is not far from many. Travis AFB is located between San Francisco and Sacramento. It is not a part of "sunny California" as it rains a lot and is usually very windy. The summers and pretty tame with temperatures reaching the 90s and sometimes 100s. The winters get very cold but snow is not common. The base is pretty fast-paced due to its mission. Travis AFB is home to the C-5, C-17, and KC-10. The housing is nice if you get the newer duplex housing. The apartment style housing is disappointing. Off base housing is pretty pricey due to it being California. Everything is more expensive there...everything. California is very excersise driven. If you enjoy bike riding, rock climbing, jogging, skiing, snowboarding, or anything like that, you will find Travis AFB to be a great place. I found myself rarely leaving the base because everything I needed was there. The BX and Commissary are nicely sized. The hospital recently became the largest stateside and provides all services. I enjoyed my time there and would definitely recommend it.
