Barksdale is a very nice base and the surrounding Shreveport/Bossier City Area has plenty of malls and restaurants. On base housing is really nice as long as you stay away from the East Reservaion. There are a lot of historical homes that are beautiful. We live off base in Shreveport which is the more "cultured" side of the river where they have more Mom & Pop shops and restaurants. Bossier is chain-heaven, if you like that sort of thing. Sports are plentiful here, and not just on base. There is indoor soccer year-round in Shreveport and ice hockey (yes ice hockey in Louisiana) at the Century-Tel Center where the local CHL Team (The Mudbugs) play. The climate can be downright HOT here but A/C is pletiful. I don't recommend spending much time outdoors from April to October though, which is a big bummer. The base community is not as close here since there is a lot to do in the surrounding area. Oh, and Louisiana schools are 49th in the country so watch your district.
