Fort Irwin Ca, is HOT, HOT and HOT, it i slocated int he middle of the Mojave dessert. The closest town in 40 miles away and the only big store there is Walmart and it is not even a super Walmart.
Housing is not plentiful for the amount of families that are getting stationed here. They have one hotel on post that is operated by contractors, and often Soldiers and their families must live in Barstow until they receive housing, becaseu most of the contractors working on post have all the rooms at the hotel. If you do get orders for Fort Irwin, leave your families at home until you acquire housing, living out of a hotel room is very expensive. There is no kitchen in the hotel and only fast foods places to eat on this post.
The PX is small and carry no clothing to fit women, only very petite women and teenagers. The commissary is not that large but it carries most of the things a military family would need.
Fort Irwin has a Burger King, Taco Bell and a Popeye's chicken , all of which are packed when a rotation of training takes place. Soldiers come into to Fort Irwin to train at different times of the year.
For those of you who have high school kids, the high school is located 40 miles away in Yermo, there are 2 elementary schools on post, but as far as activities for childern, there are none. They
have one swimming pool in which everyone shares, families memebers and Soldiers.
If you like driving, Las Vegas is 2 hours away in one direction and Las Angeles is 2 hours in the other direction. The traffic, the price of gas and the long drives gets old real quick.
I am trying ot make the best of it unti it is time for us to PCS.
